VCU Department of Family Medicine receives awards from the VAFP

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Family Medicine, its faculty and programs recently received three awards for 2007 from the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians.
Steven N. Spence M.D., director of the VCU Blackstone residency, received the Family Physician of the Year award, which is presented to physicians who serve their community with compassionate, comprehensive and caring medical service on a continuing basis.
Steven S. Leblang M.D., director of the VCU Riverside family medicine residency, received the James P. Charlton, M.D., Teacher of the Year award. VAFP awards this annually for excellence in teaching in family medicine.
Mark H. Ryan M.D., assistant clinical professor, received the Volunteer of the Year award, which is designed to recognize a Virginia family physician whose service to his or her profession and the community exemplifies the true nature of volunteerism.
Spence graduated from the VCU Riverside family medicine program in 1980, where he then served on the faculty. Leblang graduated from the VCU Riverside family medicine residency in 1984 and served on the faculty from 1990-2003. Ryan graduated from the VCU School of Medicine in 2000 and from the Blackstone residency in 2003.
The Virginia Academy of Family Physicians advances and represents the specialty of family medicine.
The VCU Family Medicine program is a system of six, community-based residency programs located in urban, suburban and rural settings. The residents are connected to health care centers and family medicine centers for clinical support. More than 1,000 physicians have graduated from its residency programs.
