VCU Health System announced that Nkanta “Nick” Hines will serve as the chief of staff for Marsha D. Rappley, M.D., chief executive officer for VCU Health System and VCU vice president of health sciences, effective July 3.
Hines brings more than 20 years of health care leadership and experience to VCU Health System. The chief of staff will serve as a vital link between Rappley and the constituents of VCU Health System and VCU. Hines will have a key role in logistics, planning and communicating with all members of the executive leadership team, along with management responsibility and accountability for improving operational efficiency.
“Mr. Hines joins our team with a depth of experience and a commitment to our mission,” Rappley said. “We greatly look forward to the talent and insight that he will bring.”
Hines comes to VCU Health System from the American Board of Internal Medicine, where he has been the lead operational officer since 2014. As a member of the CEO’s cabinet, he was tasked with the implementation of strategic initiatives while leading large-scale organizational change. Hines was responsible for operational components highlighted by budget and planning, human resources, business services, project management and customer experience, and he was responsible for developing business analytic metrics, dashboards and policies.
Prior to joining ABIM, Hines served in executive roles with Fresenius Vascular Care for three years and managed 23 outpatient surgical facilities and physician practice sites across the country. Hines also worked for HCA as its director of ambulatory surgery business development in the Virginia market and was selected as one of the management and development trainees at HCA’s national headquarters in Nashville. Hines also has experience in the pharmaceutical and research industries with Novartis and E.I. DuPont.
Hines received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Virginia State University, a Master of Biomedical Science from Eastern Virginia Medical School and a Master of Business Administration from Averett University.
