The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System is hosting Legacy of Heroes, an award-winning multimedia presentation by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons that commemorates the contributions of orthopaedic surgeons during World War II.

Free and open to the public, the exhibit will take place through Aug. 24 in the lobby of the VCU Medical Center’s Gateway Building at 12th and Marshall streets. The project includes a traveling exhibition, book, video documentary and Web site.

This history of orthopaedic surgeons and their wartime experiences includes personal, detailed accounts of individuals and chronicles the strides made in orthopaedic trauma treatment as a result of developments stemming from World War II.

More than 100 academy members, also World War II veterans now in their 70s and 80s, were interviewed to record and preserve their individual stories, many of which are included in the book “Legacy of Heroes,” and in the documentary film “Wounded in Action.”
