The Virginia Commonwealth University Institute for Women’s Health recently received a Jenkins Foundation Award for $65,000, which will help the institute continue its shelter-based health services project.
In partnership with the YWCA of Richmond, Safe Harbor, Hanover Safe Place and other area safety-net providers, the institute works to increase access to and education about health services for women and their children in three local crisis shelters.
“This project is a natural extension of the institute’s goal to strengthen research and service projects that enhance and increase university engagement with the greater Richmond community and that bridge the resources and expertise of academia with pressing community needs,” said Susan Kornstein, M.D., executive director of the VCU Institute for Women’s Health.
The project is funded by the Jenkins Foundation, which is committed to expanding access to community-based services through programs and organizations that have the potential to make a significant impact on the quality of health in the Richmond area.
The VCU Institute for Women’s Health is one of only 20 nationally recognized Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health in the United States. For more information, visit http://www.womenshealth.vcu.edu.
