VCU Partners with World Affairs Council of Greater Richmond to Present Freedom and Social Memory in Global Perspective Panel Discussion

Virginia Commonwealth University, in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Greater Richmond, will present an international panel of experts to discuss the topic of “Freedom and Social Memory in Global Perspective.”

The panel discussion will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, in the Grand Ballroom of The Jefferson Hotel located at 101 W. Franklin St.

The panel discussion is one in a series of events marking the VCU “Year of Freedom: Confronting Our Past, Facing Our Future,” the university’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War and Emancipation.  This event brings together a unique gathering of international scholars who will discuss struggles for freedom and the challenges of building inclusive societies.

Featured speakers include John Kneebone, Ph.D., associate professor and history department chair at VCU; Madge Dresser, Ph.D., professor of history at University of the West of England; Javier Fernández Galeano, Fulbright Fellow specializing in history at The New School of Social Research; and Rozena Maart, Ph.D., professor of gender studies at University of KwaZulu-Natal.

This event is the keynote address of the Sixth International Conference of the Center for Integrative Mediterranean Studies, a tripartite research and exchange-based partnership between the University of Córdoba (Spain), the University of Messina (Italy) and VCU.

The panel discussion is free and open to the public.
