VCU Police Step Up Seat Belt Education, Enforcement during 'Click It or Ticket' Campaign

VCU Police are adding about 50 temporary signs to the roads that run through both campuses. These signs carry a simple but important message that too many drivers ignore: “Click It or Ticket.”
For the next week, officers will focus on seat belt education, promoting proper usage through signs on and around both campuses, magnets on patrol cars, a highly visible message on the Siegel Center marquee, social media and other avenues. A pre-campaign survey of seatbelt usage along the 1100 block of West Broad Street revealed that 72% of drivers wore seat belts, well below the 2011 national average of 84%.
Following the one week education period, VCU Police will conduct a two week enforcement period from May 20 to June 2. Police will also hold an administrative checkpoint on Saturday, June 1, to check for seat belt violations and other traffic issues.
Last year during the Click It or Ticket campaign, VCU Police wrote 938 summonses and made 54 arrests during the enforcement period, including 19 arrests for driving under the influence and 139 tickets for seat belt violations.
