In observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Radiation Sciences team participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk in Richmond’s Byrd Park.
The Radiation Sciences team, made up of 50 students, faculty and friends, was the largest VCU team at the October event. The team raised more than $2,000 to support breast cancer research.
“A highlight of the event was when a breast cancer survivor recognized several of the radiation therapy students who had provided her treatment,” said Jeffrey Legg, Ph.D., chairman and assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Sciences. “It was a very heartwarming, emotional and poignant moment that brought home the impact on patients’ lives.”
The Department of Radiation Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science degree in clinical radiation sciences in nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy and radiography. It is Virginia’s only B.S. program with content specific to radiography and radiation therapy and the only nuclear medicine program in central Virginia.
