The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry will present the inaugural Delta Dental Miles for Smiles 5K race to benefit the Missions of Mercy, or M.O.M. project.

The race begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Joseph Bryan Park, Richmond.

All proceeds from the Delta Dental Miles for Smiles 5K will go directly to the M.O.M. Project, which brings free dental care to rural and underserved communities in Virginia.

According to organizers, funding for the M.O.M. Project is critical, since lightning struck the Virginia Dental Association building in late July causing a fire. The organization, which helps to run the M.O.M. Project, lost most of its stored supplies – including dental chairs and other vitally important items.

Sponsors for the Delta Dental Miles for Smiles 5K include Delta Dental; Johnson & Johnson; Drs. Schroeder, Stenger, Cole & Gupta; Proctor & Gamble; Mizuno; Road Runner Running Store; and Patterson Dental.
