VCU School of Dentistry professor honored for contributions in dental research

RICHMOND, Va. – Harvey Schenkein, D.D.S., Ph.D., assistant dean for research in Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Dentistry, was selected to receive the 2003 Basic Research in Periodontal Disease Award from the International Association of Dental Research (IADR).
This is the highest honor given by the IADR. Schenkein received the award for his contributions and research related to the genetics and pathogenesis of periodontal disease. He was recently presented with a plaque and cash prize during the opening ceremonies of the IADR’s 81st general session in Göteborg, Sweden.
The award is designed to encourage outstanding achievements in basic research in periodontal disease. Supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Company, the award is one of 15 Distinguished Scientist Awards given annually by the IADR.
Schenkein received his dental and doctoral degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has published numerous works in the areas of inflammation, immunology, and human genetics. Schenkein has been assistant dean for research and director for VCU’s Clinical Research Center for Diseases since 1986, and is a former director of postgraduate periodontics at VCU. A resident of Richmond, Schenkein has been an active member of IADR for over 20 years.
The IADR is a worldwide organization that works to establish and support programs that promote oral health research by developing partnerships with international dental associations, industry, health agencies, and scientific and educational professional organizations.
