The Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and the Medical Reserve Corps will demonstrate the Stabilization and Treatment in Place unit to showcase emergency disaster relief.

The STIP unit will be displayed Wednesday, April 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Student Commons Plaza, 907 Floyd Ave.  An emergency simulation and demonstration of a field hospital with the Medical Reserve Corps will take place at noon.

Designed for efficient and immediate care, the STIP unit is a mobile emergency tent equipped for rapid, on-site patient stabilization and treatment during an emergency. The unit can also provide for first aid at mass gatherings and is equipped to care for more than 100 patients per day.

The unit has the capacity to enable providers to perform invasive procedures, including minor surgery, and can maintain its own climate control, including the generation of electricity and oxygen. The STIP unit can be readied for operation and deployment within an hour.

The Medical Reserve Corps was founded after President Bush’s 2002 State of the Union Address, in which he asked Americans to volunteer in support of their country. MRC units are community-based and volunteers include medical and public health professionals like physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians and epidemiologists.
