VCU to Host Women’s Health Research Day

The Virginia Commonwealth University Institute for Women’s Health will host the ninth annual Women’s Health Research Day next week. This year’s theme is “Women’s Health Research: From Bench, To Bedside, To Community.” The annual event is a celebration and promotion of research activities in women’s health at VCU.
The event will take place Wednesday, April 24, at the Jonah L. Larrick Student Center, MCV Campus, 900 Turpin St., from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Opening remarks and the keynote lecture, presented by Ponjola Coney, M.D., senior associate dean for faculty affairs in the VCU School of Medicine, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the VCU Center on Health Disparities, will begin at 1:30 p.m. The title of Coney’s keynote lecture is "Health Disparities: Where Are We Now?"
Following the keynote lecture, a plenary session begins at 2:15 p.m. featuring two presentations. The first is "Talking about Health Behaviors in Latino Families" presented by Rosalie Corona, Ph.D., associate professor of clinical psychology. The second presentation, "Circulating Progenitor Cells and Vascular Dysfunction," will be given by Edward (Trey) Wickham III, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Pediatrics and associate director for medical research, TEENS Program in the VCU Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
The research day wraps up with a poster awards ceremony at 3 p.m., followed by a poster session and reception at 3:30 p.m.
Community members interested in innovative research in women’s health are welcome and encouraged to attend. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required.
