Volunteers from Virginia Commonwealth University's Massey Cancer Center are encouraging Richmonders to honor a special person on Valentine's Day by purchasing a "Ribbons for Research" valentine to benefit a breast cancer research program.

"'Ribbons for Research' gives the public an opportunity to support a worthy cause within the spirit of Valentine's Day generosity," said Dr. Gordon Ginder, director of VCU's Massey Cancer Center.

Based on past experience, Massey Cancer Center officials say while many valentines are bought to honor a loved one or friend lost to breast cancer, many also are purchased on behalf of a breast cancer survivor.

A $10 donation will buy a pink ribbon inscribed with a person's name and a valentine acknowledgement card to that person. All purchased ribbons inscribed with the honoree's name will be placed on a "Wall of Courage" located in the James Center Atrium, beginning Feb. 10.

Ribbons and cards will be available for purchase Feb. 10-14 at designated Richmond area Bank of America banking center locations. Individuals can also purchase valentines during those days from Noon to 2 p.m. in the James Center Atrium.

Bank of America and LandAmerica, a financial real estate group, have teamed up with the VCU volunteers to support "Ribbons for Research." For more information regarding "Ribbons for Research" call VCU's Massey Cancer Center at 828-1451.
