Virginia High School Journalism Workshop at VCU Provides Training and Experience for Tomorrow’s Journalists

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Virginia High School Journalism Workshop is teaching a dozen Central Virginia students about print, broadcast and multimedia journalism.

The workshop, which is sponsored by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and the Virginia Press Association and is coordinated by VCU’s School of Mass Communications, runs until July 22.

The two-week program offers the students experience in carrying out story assignments, participating in news conferences and conducting interviews. Workshop sessions also feature guest speakers, including Emmy award-winning journalists and local editors. 

Student participants are Tiarra Brown, 16, Varina High School; Rachael Chudoba, 16, Lee-Davis High School; Gates Deppner, 17, Douglas Freeman High School; Wayne Epps, 17, Prince George High School; Elise Fegler, 17, Manchester High School; Alexis Jirtle, 17, Manchester; Ryan Kellner, 15, Hanover High School; Claudia Lopez, 15, Hanover; Emily Sours, 17, New Kent High School; Matthew Tyson, 17, Douglas Freeman; Annie Weidhaas, 16, Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School; and Emily Williams, 14, Hanover.
