Research in action
Finding better ways to treat gambling addiction. Helping youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities find career paths. Exploring algae in Richmond's urban lakes – and the risks it poses to humans and wildlife. At small and large scales, Virginia Commonwealth University has emerged as a research powerhouse that optimizes health, enriches the human experience and addresses society’s pressing challenges. From our labs and from the field, we put research in action.
With more than $500 million in sponsored research funding annually, VCU is saving lives and finding solutions in medical and health sciences. We are expanding the frontiers of fields ranging from education, engineering and materials sciences to sustainable manufacturing, the environment, and the arts and humanities.
VCU is contributing to our local, regional and national economies, with an economic impact exceeding $9 billion. But numbers are just part of a story rooted in a larger mission: At VCU, our research and innovation ensure that the discoveries made here support the communities – and the world – we serve.
