VCU held its second annual Giving Day on May 3. The 24-hour fundraising event united the larger VCU community in support of more than 400 initiatives across campus.

By midnight May 4, 5,107 VCU friends from around the world had made 6,855 gifts raising $7,832,458. These gifts will make possible transformative innovations, potentially lifesaving research, top-notch patient care and student success.

“We are thrilled to have experienced another successful Giving Day this year,” said Jay Davenport, vice president of development and alumni relations. “Every gift — of every size — helped us exceed our goals and enabled our schools, colleges and centers to unlock valuable match and challenge funds.”

One all-day challenge matched gifts to any VCU giving opportunity with a gift of an equal amount to Massey Cancer Center, up to $500,000. Gifts specifically to Massey’s Giving Day opportunity were also matched with gifts of equal amounts to the center, up to $500,000. With these challenges and generous gifts from Giving Day donors, VCU raised more than $5 million for Massey.

This generosity demonstrates to students, patients, faculty and staff that they are an important priority. Students benefit from enhanced learning environments, faculty can explore expanded research opportunities and patients continue to receive unparalleled care.

“I am sincerely thankful to each and every person who participated in Giving Day,” said Michael Rao, Ph.D., president of VCU and VCU Health. “We are able to support our students, make exciting discoveries and provide our patients with potentially lifesaving treatment and care — all because of the support of our deeply committed alumni and friends.”
