Dear VCU community,
This morning the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that may affect admissions policies at colleges and universities. Subject matter experts at VCU are carefully reviewing the court’s opinion to determine how to interpret and apply its specific requirements to our university. We won’t know all of those answers right away.
VCU has been preparing for some time by evaluating admissions procedures and considering the impact of this ruling. Many of VCU’s admissions procedures are unlikely to be affected.
What we do know is that VCU remains committed to being the high-access, high-excellence institution that we have long been. Our priority is helping as many students as possible succeed.
A significant number of VCU's students come from underrepresented backgrounds. For example, a third of our freshmen class are first-generation students and nearly a third of our undergraduate students are Pell-eligible. We are proud that our student body reflects such a diverse array of experiences. VCU is the model of what a truly public research university should be, and we define ourselves by who we include and whose lives we lift. That won’t change.
As we learn more about how this ruling may affect VCU, we will continue to communicate with the VCU community.
Sincerely,
Michael Rao
