The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University has been named a top 10 best new museum by the USA TODAY 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards. The ICA at VCU was the only art museum recognized on the list.
Contenders for the award — ranging from art galleries to history museums to children’s museums — represented the best museum openings of the past two years.
Since its opening in April 2018, the ICA has welcomed approximately 150,000 visitors. The multidisciplinary institution has produced new art and ideas through exhibitions, talks, performances, film screenings and community events that drive conversations about art and society.
Its latest exhibition, “The Otolith Group: Xenogenesis,” is part fiction, part documentary, featuring films and installations that address contemporary global issues and is open through May 10. The ICA is the only U.S. venue for “Xenogenesis,” and this presentation marks the group’s first large-scale exhibition in North America. The ICA’s most recent exhibition, “Great Force,” was named by The New York Times as a show not to miss for fall 2019.
