VCU's MCV Hospitals offers nutrition and weight loss classes

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Commonwealth University will offer four weight control seminars this spring and summer at VCU’s Medical College of Virginia Women’s HealthCare, 9000 Stony Point Parkway.

The seminar will be offered:

10 a.m. - noon, May 10;
7 p.m. - 9 p.m., May 22;
10 a.m. - noon, June 13; and
10 a.m. - noon , July 18;

The seminars, called Food & Fitness: Health for a Lifetime, will focus on balancing protein, carbohydrates and fat for healthy weight loss. Participants will learn about the hazards of various fad diets and strategies for weight loss success. Healthy recipes will be available, along with taste tests of low-fat foods.

A study reported in the journal Science found that 54 percent of adults in the United States are overweight and 22 percent of adults are obese. Obesity is associated with several chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
