African-American Illustrator Tom Feelings to present works at VCU on Feb. 26

WHAT: In celebration of Black History Month, author and illustrator Tom Feelings will offer a slide presentation and discuss his book, "The Middle Passage: White Ships/Black Cargo." The publication contains black-and-white paintings that blend abstract design and realistic images that allow viewers to feel as if they are aboard 19th century slave ships.
The event is sponsored by the Office for Multicultural Student Affairs within the Division of Student Affairs, and co-sponsored by International Studies, African-American Studies, the College of Humanities and Sciences, the depts. of History, Foreign Languages, Philosophy and Religious Studies, School of the Arts, School of Business, Health Career Opportunity Program at VCU’s Medical College of Virginia and the School of Education.
WHO: Feelings is a former professor of art at the University of South Carolina and the first African American to win a Caldecott Honor with his illustrations for "Moja Means One," written by Muriel Feelings. He has illustrations published in over 20 books and his paintings are in the private collections of many notable Americans.
WHEN: Tues., Feb. 26, 7-9 p.m.
WHERE: VCU’s Student Commons, Commonwealth Ballroom, 907 Floyd Ave., Richmond,Va. Books will be available for purchase and signings.
COST: Admission to the presentation and reception is free.
