Campus Sustainability Day 2013

As a kickoff to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Family Weekend 2013, the fourth Campus Sustainability Day defied the rain and brought hundreds of faculty, staff and students out Friday for food, facts and Segways.

The yearly event focuses on the departments and organizations throughout campus that strive every day to make VCU a clean, thriving and sustainable learning environment.

The event, which was held in the Student Commons Plaza, helped spread the word about ways that individuals can do their part to keep VCU green. Those represented at the event included VCU RamBikes, Residential Life and Housing, Green Unity for VCU and the brand new student organization, Verde, among many others.

“Our mission this year is to get the word out about single-stream recycling,” said Parker Long, sustainability reporting and outreach coordinator in VCU’s Office of Sustainability. “We’ve been having students answer a four-question quiz that helps to educate them about what can be recycled now – which is practically everything. VCU now accepts all grades of plastic and plastic bags.”

If you noticed an abundance of people riding Segways on campus, they were participants of free green tours, hosted by VCU Goes Green and Segway of Richmond. The tours visited nine sustainable spots, such as the Pollak Building Green Roof and the School of Engineering West building.
