During the week of Nov. 8, the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine hosted National Primary Care Week on the MCV campus. The event, sponsored by the VCU Student Family Medicine Association, the American Medical Students Association, Physicians for Human Rights, the Geriatric Student Interest Group and Club Med, included programs that focused on the delivery and impact of primary care and topics related to primary care careers.
Medical students viewed and discussed the PBS documentary on health disparities titled “Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?” and participated in seminars about financial considerations related to primary care careers, relief work in Uganda, the use of electronic health records, the value of patient centered medical homes, and current issues relating to health reform. Two evening sessions also were held to give students the opportunity to learn about general internal medicine and to gain exposure to and practice with osteopathic manipulative medicine.
