Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Radiation Sciences will honor Allisha Ashford as the inaugural recipient of the 2008 Janet Harvey Trivette Radiation Therapy Memorial Scholarship.

“We are honored that Dr. Trivette and his fellow physicians chose the VCU Department of Radiation Sciences to honor Mrs. Trivette,” said Jeff Legg, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Sciences. “Their generosity enhances the education of radiation therapy students at VCU.”

The scholarship was created in memory of Janet Trivette, who recently lost her battle with breast cancer. She was the wife of George Trivette, M.D., a local radiation oncologist. Trivette along with Drs. Judy L. Chin, Taryn G. Torre and Jo Anne D. Walker — all local radiation oncologists — endowed the scholarship.

The scholarship rewards a rising senior radiation therapy student who shows exemplary clinical aptitude and has maintained at least a 3.2 departmental grade point average. The scholarship will fund Ashford’s tuition, fees and books for both senior semesters, based on in-state tuition costs.

"Though this scholarship is not need-based, it is nice to know that some of the financial pressure may be alleviated for this senior radiation therapy student,” said Melanie Dempsey, VCU Radiation Therapy program director. “Dr. Trivette and his partners are to be commended for their support of this VCU Allied Health Program.”
