Dr. Cary Grayson Suter, former neurology chair, dies

Dr. Cary Grayson Suter, former chair of the Department of Neurology at the Medical College of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, died Aug. 31. He was 89.

After studying electroencephalography and electromyography at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Suter in 1959 brought his expertise in these fields to the Department of Neurology at what was then called the Medical College of Virginia. He served as department chair from 1963 until 1985. While chair, he established the annual Hans Berger Symposium, which brings together distinguished faculty from epilepsy centers and neurophysiology laboratories to discuss electrodiagnostic testing in the clinical management of patients with epilepsy and related disorders.

Dr. Suter, a Bridgewater native, earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Hampden-Sydney College. In 1947, he received his medical degree from the University of Virginia.

He is survived by a daughter, Anna Deane Begiebing of Whitehall; a son, Dr. Cary Carr Suter of Corrales, N.M.; and a grandson.
