Maricel Quintana-Baker, Ph.D., senior associate for academic affairs for the State Council of Higher Education, addresses educators and government representatives gathered at Virginia Commonwealth University's Scott House for Encuentro Latino: Latino Issues in Virginia Higher Education Planning and Network Meeting.

"The inaugural meeting is being held here because VCU has a long tradition of community engagement and diversity and offers a central location which makes it a logical host for this event," said R. McKenna Brown, Ph.D., professor and director, School of World Studies.

The group discussed recruitment, retention and climate for Latinos, network building and collaborative research projects. In a related development, the Virginia Latino Advisory Board (VLAB) today announced the launch of the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network (VALHEN) Internet site. The site will link faculty and staff who work with Latino students and Latino issues at Virginia's public and private institutions of higher education.
