Forty-nine of Virginia Commonwealth University's most determined employees are taking part in the world's largest workplace health and wellness program — the Global Corporate Challenge.
With a goal of logging 10,000 steps each day during the 16-week walking challenge, the participants — divvied up into seven teams of seven each — also will take a virtual walking tour of the world online. How far they go virtually depends on how many actual steps they log. Each participant receives a starter pack that includes two pedometers and a backpack.
"VCU is excited to be part of this walking challenge," said Debbie Fitzgerald of Human Resources. "It can be hard to work fitness into your daily routine, but this challenge combines camaraderie, awareness and fun to make it easier for our employees."
Last year, more than 130,000 people participated, averaging 12,725 steps each day. The average corporate worker only averages 3,000 steps a day. Participants reported an increase in morale and energy and a decrease in absenteeism and waistlines.
This is VCU's first year in the challenge. Walkers from both campuses have formed the teams Sole Patrol, High Heels, Walking on Sunshine, RAMblers, Honeybee's, Sassy Sole Sisters and Trekkers. As part of this initiative, VCU will sponsor at least 49 children from Carver Elementary in the Global Children's Challenge that takes place in the fall.
The challenge takes place May 24 through Sept. 12. A kickoff will be held on Thursday, May 24, at noon at the University Student Commons Plaza. All are invited to cheer on the teams as they begin their journey.
