Anna Journey, graduate teaching assistant, Department of English
Graduate student Journey, contributing editor of Blackbird and a student in the MFA in Creative Writing program, was published in the “Best New Poets 2006” anthology, published by the University of Virginia’s Meridian magazine. Journey writes predominantly in free verse and her poem for the anthology, “Lucifer’s Panties at Lowe’s Garden Center,” portrays an ironic narrator renaming the generic hibiscus plants in a commercial garden using strange and metaphorically rich actual names such as “Rum Runner,” “the Fifth Dimension,” and “Eye of the Storm.” Journey recently discovered the previously unpublished sonnet by Sylvia Plath, “Ennui,” which received international media coverage. Her poetry is published in FIELD, Gulf Coast, Mid-American Review and Shenandoah.
