RICHMOND, Va. — For the sixth year, Richmond area high school bands will perform at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Performing Arts Center, 922 Park Ave.
Performances will be held May 20 at the following times:
- 4 p.m. - the Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band, directed by Peter G. Anderson, adjunct professor in the VCU Department of Music.
- 6 p.m - the Greater Richmond Honors Band, directed by Matthew McCutcheon, VCU alumnus.
- 8 p.m. - the Greater Richmond Youth Wind Ensemble, directed by Terry Austin, Ph.D., assistant professor in the VCU Department of Music.
About 140 students from high schools in Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield counties are selected for the bands through auditions held annually in January. About 60 percent of those students who audition are chosen to perform. Throughout the spring semester, VCU music faculty direct rehearsals at the university, culminating in the annual concerts.
The concerts are free and open to the public. For details, call Glenn Winters at 828-2772.
