Carpenter, director of VCU’s Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Program, will present at the ninth annual Magnetics 2013 conference Feb. 7-8 in Orlando.

In his presentation, “Nanocomposite Carbide as Alternatives to Rare-Earth Permanent Magnets,” Carpenter will discuss a new synthesized nanocomposite material, which has the potential to become the first non-rare earth permanent magnet developed in more than 40 years.

Carpenter began his career as an assistant professor at VCU in 2004 and became an associate professor in 2008. He founded the Atomic Engineering Laboratory, which focuses on synthesis, characterization and applications of magnetic particles. In 2009, Carpenter became the director of the VCU NANOcenter. His research interests include biomedical applications, growth mechanisms and nanomanufacturing.

Dewey, president of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics/Experimental Biology, will receive the society’s 2013 Torald Sollmann Award for research and significant contributions in medicine and education.

The award will be presented during the Business Meeting Awards Ceremony at the society’s annual meeting Saturday, April 20.

Dewey has worked at VCU since 1972, when he was recruited to serve as director of the graduate program in pharmacology. He has held various positions since that time including vice chair for research, dean of the School of Basic Health Sciences, assistant dean of the Graduate School, associate provost and vice president for research and graduate studies and director of the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park.

Dewey’s research is directed toward defining the action mechanism of drugs of abuse with an emphasis on opioids.
