Kornstein among Women to Watch

Susan G. Kornstein, M.D., has been chosen by Jewish Women International as a 2008 Women to Watch honoree for her work as a pioneer in women’s health.
Kornstein, a professor of psychiatry and obstetrics/gynecology in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, is one of 10 women nationwide to receive the JWI’s national leadership award this year.
Kornstein is co-founder and executive director of the VCU Institute for Women’s Health, a groundbreaking center for treatment, research, education, community outreach and the promotion of female leadership in science and medicine. She is also editor in chief of the Journal of Women’s Health and president of the International Association for Women’s Mental Health.
Although much has changed in the field since she began practicing medicine, more progress is needed, she said. “Women’s health is much more of a priority on the national health care agenda. But a lot of work still needs to be done.”
This year’s Women to Watch recipients will be featured in the fall issue of Jewish Woman magazine, and honored at an annual celebration in Washington, D.C., that includes a gala luncheon, awards ceremony and dynamic honorees’ discussion panel on Dec. 8.
