RICHMOND, Va. (Aug. 17, 2006) – Incoming freshmen at Virginia Commonwealth University will move into their dormitory rooms this weekend, marking the start of a new school year.

VCU has assigned 4,839 students to university housing this fall – 110 students more than a year ago. The 30,276 students expected to enroll this school year at VCU will represent the largest student body in school history, surpassing last year's total of 29,349. Among the incoming students are 3,550 freshmen and 1,800 transfers. Both totals are approximately the same as they were during the 2005-06 school year.

Freshmen will move into their dorm rooms on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Students are slotted to particular arrival times based on alphabetical order. VCU's Office of Housing and Residential Life expects traffic congestion in the areas near student dorms on both days.

Areas to avoid include the 700 and 800 blocks of West Franklin Street, near Brandt, Johnson and Rhoads halls; the 700 block of West Main Street near Gladding Residence Center and the 700 block of West Grace Street near West Grace Street Housing. Traffic congestion is also expected on the MCV campus near Cabaniss Hall, located at 615 N. Eighth Street.
