The 2020 Lowenthal Symposium on degenerative brain disorders will welcome five renowned researchers in the field, including a Nobel laureate.

The symposium, held by the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy every two years, brings together top researchers from around the world to discuss their latest research on neurodegenerative disorders. These diseases — including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and prion diseases — affect millions.

The symposium’s keynote speaker will be Bruce Beutler, M.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Beutler is the recipient of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Other speakers include:

  • Justin Hanes, Ph.D., the Lewis J. Ort Professor of Ophthalmology, Johns Hopkins University
  • Anne Murphy, Ph.D., associate professor and associate director of the Neuroscience Institute, Georgia State University
  • Michael Geschwind, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurology, Weill Institute for Neurosciences, University of California San Francisco
  • Jenny Ting, Ph.D., the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor and director of the Center for Translational Immunology, University of North Carolina School of Medicine

Attendance is free. Space is limited; registration is required.

The Lowenthal Symposium is hosted by VCU School of Pharmacy. It is made possible by generous gifts from two school alumni — Lance Berkowitz, an entrepreneur and pharmacist, and Hilda Meth, Ed.D., the widow of Werner Lowenthal, after whom the symposium is named.
