The VCU School of Nursing welcomed sophomore nursing students at the school’s first Lamplighting Ceremony at Younger Auditorium. The students are entering the school's bachelor's degree program, which students start during their sophomore year.

The ceremony provided an overview of the nursing program and profession for students.  Dean Nancy Langston, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, explained the history and significance of the lamp in nursing. The symbol is traced to modern nursing founder Florence Nightingale, whose steadfastness treating British soldiers during the Crimean War earned her the moniker “the lady with the lamp.” Langston also tied the candles to the flame of knowledge. Students learned about the school's heritage, the Connector Program, which matches nursing students with alumni, and various other opportunities to get involved and navigate their first year in nursing.

The event concluded with Shannon Storey, the senior class leader, inviting sophomores to the front of the auditorium to light a lantern. Langston encouraged students to take their lights forward into the world to guide them in pursuit of a successful nursing career.
