As students settle in to winter break, Virginia Commonwealth University provides opportunities to stay in touch and gets ready for 2012.

Intersession classes, a winter ski trip and basketball games keep the VCU community active during the break.  The university is revved up for the new year — basketball matchups kick off in early January, Homecoming week takes off on Jan. 30 and Open House reaches out to prospective students on Feb. 4.

Throughout the break, the VCU Medical Center’s clinical offices remain open. Call (804) 828-9000 for more information.

Intersession classes
Holiday Intersession classes meet for 11 days between the fall and spring semesters (Dec. 27 to Jan. 7 regardless of published or added university or state holidays) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a one-hour break for lunch.

Library hours
Need a quiet place to read or relax over the break?  View the holiday operating hours for James Branch Cabell Library and Tompkins-McCaw Library.

Holiday ridesharing
Want to meet a new friend – and save gas money – while going home for the break? Check out VCU Zimride, a private network for finding and sharing rides with fellow students and staff.

Athletics
The men’s basketball team finishes 2011 home play with a Dec. 20 matchup against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The women wrap up home court action in a contest with Longwood University on Dec. 30.  Then 2012 gets rolling with multiple CAA challenges in early January for both the men and women. For times and schedules, visit VCU Athletics on the Web.

Winter ski trip
Looking for a fun winter getaway? Recreation Sports sponsors a winter break ski trip Jan. 8-14 to Smugglers’ Notch, Vt. — a longtime favorite destination for VCU students.

Traveling exhibit
Need to get your culture fix? “A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, 1910 – 1965” kicks off Jan. 19 at Cabell Library. The free exhibit explores the contributions of Jewish American songwriters to classic American popular music and is open to the public.

Open House
VCU’s Open House  on Saturday, Feb. 4, will give prospective students and their families an opportunity to meet with VCU faculty and students, view residence halls, tour the Monroe Park Campus, and much more.
