Fifty-one students from across the country participated this year in VCU’s third annual Summer Academic Enrichment Program.

Hosted by the Division for Health Sciences Diversity, the six-week interprofessional program is designed for students preparing to apply to health professions schools. VCU’s schools of Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy all participated in this year’s program.

“SAEP is a comprehensive intense program that provides undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students with many diverse opportunities to experience the nuances of health care and professional education in a tangible manner,” said Cheryl Ford-Smith, D.P.T., director of SAEP and associate professor of physical therapy, VCU School of Allied Health Professions. “Students leave our program with a greater appreciation of the sacrifices required to provide healing to the masses.”

Students who participated in this year’s program came from 13 states and territories including Puerto Rico, Texas and New York. They were split among dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and physical therapy tracks; all take classes in physiology, microbiology and pharmacology before receiving specialized instruction in their chosen track.
