Tech Transfer’s second annual reception celebrates ‘Invented at VCU’

Event celebrated and thanked the university’s close partners at Virginia BioTechnology Research Park

Members of the university community and representatives from businesses affiliated with the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park gathered for Virginia Commonwealth University Tech Transfer’s Second Annual Reception celebrating “Invented at VCU.” The event was held to celebrate and thank the university’s close partners at the research park. Event speakers were, from left, Robert T. Skunda, president and CEO of the research park; VCU President Eugene P. Trani, Ph.D.; Ivelina S. Metcheva, Ph.D., director of the Office of Technology Transfer; and Francis L. Macrina, Ph.D., vice president for research. “Congratulations to all of you. I very much look forward to your continued success as inventors and our continued success as the people who bring your inventions to the market,” Trani said. During the event, Trani also awarded the first ever VCU Distinguished Inventor Award for 2007 to Billy R. Martin, Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Matt Pleasant of Third Security LLC and Jack McDonnell of TraumaCure Inc. McDonnell, a bioscience expert and entrepreneur, established TraumaCure in 2006 after licensing the technology for WoundStat – a lightweight, granular, dressing compound developed by VCU researchers that quickly stems high-pressure bleeding in moderate to severe wounds.

Diegelmann, Ph.D.; Hakam Tiba, M.D., of the Department of Emergency Medicine; and undergraduate Kate Proffitt, a biomedical engineering major. Bowlin and Diegelmann developed the WoundStat technology with Kevin Ward, M.D., an emergency physician and associate director at the VCU Medical Center's Reanimation Engineering Shock Center.
