Title IX Update

Dear VCU Community,

As a follow-up to my July 1 email, I remind you that Virginia Commonwealth University has a new comprehensive policy regarding Title IX.  The Interim Policy on Sexual Misconduct/Violence and Sex/Gender Discrimination  will take effect this week and will be posted for public comment later this fall.

You should become familiar with this new policy, which contains extremely important information about resources, prohibited conduct and the university’s process for investigations and resolution of possible Title IX cases, including sexual assault and misconduct.

All faculty, staff and incoming students must complete online training related to Title IX and our new policy:

· New students must complete “Not Anymore,” an interactive, online education program designed to prevent sexual assault, intimate partner violence and stalking.  This program was reviewed and selected by VCU faculty and students, including student survivors of violence.

· Returning students will be encouraged to complete an updated program.  In addition, several units are collaborating with students to deliver in-person educational and awareness programs throughout the year.  These combined efforts are critical to providing our community with the knowledge and resources to take action if they notice an unsafe situation. · A similar training is being developed for faculty and staff.  Details will follow soon.

This training will help ensure that VCU does much more than simply follow the law but becomes a national example for success, equity and trust.

For questions or more information, please contact the Director of Equity and Access Services and Title IX Coordinator Laura Walsh Rugless at titleix@vcu.edu or 804-828-6404.

As members of the VCU community, we are committed to fostering an environment of mutual trust and respect.  VCU does not tolerate sexual assault, sexual exploitation, partner or relationship violence, sex/gender discrimination, sexual harassment, complicity or retaliation.  Such behavior is harmful to the wellbeing of our community members; the living, learning and working environment of our university, and collegial relationships among our faculty members, staff and students.

Sincerely,

Michael Rao

President
