Students in the undergraduate and graduate advertising programs at Virginia Commonwealth University were named finalists in the 2010 One Show college competition.

The One Show is the advertising industry’s premiere international awards competition, which recognizes creative excellence in print, television, radio, outdoor, innovative media and marketing, and integrated branding.

The 2010 One Show college competition challenged student teams from around the world to create campaigns either for NOOKA, which designs watches and other fashion accessories that are sold internationally, or Million Trees NYC, a program dedicated to improving the environment by planting 1 million trees in New York City’s five boroughs.

Undergraduate students Layheng “Lee” Khleang and Tyler Todd were named One Show finalists in the category of non-traditional campaign for their “bagvertising” advertising campaign for Million Trees NYC program.

Undergraduate students Christopher “Scott” Dalton and Curtis Reisinger were named One Show finalists in the website category for their creation of a Bark website and social networking site for the Million Trees NYC program.

“It is amazing to have two groups out of one class,” said Bridget Camden, assistant professor in advertising. “This competition features some of the best students in schools in the U.S. and the around the world.”

In addition, Brandcenter students Celia Bogardus and Sharon Showalter were named finalists in the online ad campaign category for their “neighborhood trees” campaign for the Million Trees NYC program.

"Cecilia and I have been all smiles since we found we are being awarded by the One Show in the online category,” Showalter said. “It is one of the biggest honors a young creative technologist can hope for."

The student finalists contributed work to the 16th annual One Show student exhibition preview on May 14. Their work will also be exhibited as part of the One Show Traveling Exhibition in many U.S. and international cities and will be included in this year’s One Show volume of the world’s best advertising efforts.

“It’s an honor to be included in that book,” Camden said. “Headhunters look for the names of students whose work appears in the book and try to recruit them.”
