VCU celebrates fifth annual Student Research Weeks

Events and activities will take place from April 2 to April 24 on the Monroe Park and MCV campuses of VCU.
Throughout April, undergraduate and graduate students will present overviews of their projects, theses and dissertations. These projects span many academic disciplines, including interdisciplinary studies, the College of Humanities and Sciences and the Schools of Allied Health Professions, Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Work. Students will demonstrate and discuss their projects in a variety of settings.
The events are free and open to all students, faculty, staff and the public.
Thursday, April 2
What: 11th Annual Women’s Health Research Day
Plenary and poster sessions will highlight projects from VCU students and faculty in women’s health and sex/gender differences. Awards will be given for best posters in basic science, clinical and translational research, and community and public health research. The best overall poster by a junior investigator will win the Elizabeth Fries Young Investigator Award. The poster that best demonstrates interdisciplinary collaboration will win a Building Interdisciplinary Bridges in Women’s Health Research Award.

Monday, March 26–Monday, April 5
What: School of Arts Juried Design and Fine Arts Exhibition
Selected by Dean Daderko, curator of contemporary art at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the exhibition features works by students in all fine art departments and will be on display through April 20. Faculty also will select student work for design and kinetic imaging exhibitions that will include sound art, animation and video.

Friday, April 10
What: VCU Political Science 9th Annual Student Research Conference: “Politics, Society and Foreign Affairs”
Undergraduates and junior graduates will present completed research papers and projects and ongoing research, and participate in roundtable discussions on topics related to government and international and public affairs. Students from other Virginia colleges and universities, as well as from overseas, will join the VCU community to present work. Topics will include American studies, philosophy, economics and history.
When: 8 a.m. – late afternoon

Wednesday, April 15
What: VCU Venture Creation Competition
Undergraduate and graduate students learn about entrepreneurship through the development and presentation of a concept and/or business venture to a panel of judges. Students will define their ideas in commercial terms and compete for cash prizes that can be used for further commercialization of their concepts, inventions and business ideas. Hosted by VCU’s da Vinci Center. Visit http://www.davincicenter.vcu.

Thursday, April 16
What: School of Dentistry Clinic and Research Day
Students will share their research and discuss how it is improving the practice of dentistry. Judges will award prizes for the best poster presentation by dental and dental hygiene students. Top prize is an engraved plaque and the opportunity to represent VCU School of Dentistry at the 2015 ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Program in Washington, D.C.

Monday, April 20
What: VCU Global Health Showcase
Panels and presentations will feature discussions about current international outreach to improve health outcomes around the world. The showcase will feature information about active global health projects and provide networking opportunities. Topics include the Ebola outbreak, ethics and how students and residents can get involved in global service work.
When: 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.

What: School of World Studies Senior Research Poster Exposition
School of World Studies seniors will showcase their research from Senior Seminar, internship experience, service-learning work and other academic research. Share ideas, network with recent graduates, meet community employers and learn about graduate school prospects.

Tuesday, April 21
What: Graduate Research Symposium and Exhibit

Wednesday, April 22
What: Poster Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creativity
Students will present their research to academic peers, VCU faculty members, community members, friends and family. Projects include research and scholarly work from a wide variety of academic disciplines. Organized by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.
When: 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

What: Graduate Recruitment Fair
Undergraduates from all disciplines are invited to attend to learn about opportunities in graduate education at VCU and beyond. Recruiters will be present from a number of universities. Hosted by VCU Office of Admissions.

Friday, April 24
What: School of Social Work Research Symposium
Graduate and undergraduate students from the VCU School of Social Work will present their research and scholarly projects in the form of posters and oral presentations.

What: School of Engineering Senior Design Expo
Undergraduate engineering students will share capstone senior projects to increase awareness of the engineering profession among middle and high school students. About 40 senior design teams will display and demonstrate prototypes, which they have been working on for eight months. Visit http://www.egr.vcu.edu/senior-
