Allen Lewis, Ph.D., Department of Rehabilitation Counseling
Lewis, associate professor and chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling in the School of Allied Health Professions, has a grant called Project Empowerment that focuses on building minority group research capacity, and is currently spotlighted in the International Innovation Magazine. Each year, the magazine selects several research projects from the international landscape that it considers to be innovative to feature in its magazine, which has a worldwide readership of more than 35,000.
Lewis first became interested and involved in this work in 1998, when he began teaching on the subject matter, and more formally, in 2001 when he submitted his first version of this idea in an early unfunded grant proposal.
The aim of the project is to provide documentation of the current experiences of culturally diverse populations in the public disability system in the United States and to evaluate the current status of research methods used on these groups to offer recommendations on how the process of conducting research on culturally diverse populations can be more culturally competent.
For the project, Lewis is being funded by a five-year, $1.78 million grant from the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
