Campus leaders, government representatives, law enforcement officers and emergency personnel from across Virginia participated in the fourth annual Governor’s Campus Preparedness Conference on Aug. 3 at the University Student Commons.

Gov. Bob McDonnell welcomed participants in opening remarks.

“Campus security isn’t only important to me because I’m governor,” McDonnell said. “I’m personally vested. As a dad, I’ve got three young people going off to college.”

Nearly 450 people attended the daylong conference, which focused on legal and policy considerations of Virginia’s emergency and disaster laws; college threat assessment teams and tools; communications, alerts and social media; restoring balance after a critical event; and information sharing and multi-jurisdictional collaboration.

The conference also included demonstrations of the latest products and services to improve campus security from 19 vendors.
