VCU’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, which is part of the College of Humanities and Sciences, and the School of Social Work hosted a panel discussion on Nov. 28, featuring (from left to right) James Hinterlong, Ph.D., dean of the VCU School of Social Work; Lester Salamon, Ph.D., John Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies Professor; James Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade; and Greg Wingfield, Greater Richmond Partnership,

The discussion centered on Salamon’s recent study, “Virginia’s Nonprofit Sector: Shaping the Economic, Cultural, And Social Landscape,” which found that Virginia’s nonprofit sector is the third largest employer among industries in the state, with 235,100 paid workers and 130,000 fulltime equivalent volunteers. Nonprofits in Virginia also amass over $39.2 billion in revenues and spend $37.9 billion.
