Nearly 100 students from across the state competed in Virginia’s State Economics Challenge on April 11 in the Student Commons at VCU.

The event, which was hosted by the Virginia Council on Economic Education at VCU’s School of Business, is part of a national competition designed to foster interest in economics among middle-school and high-school students. The winners advanced to regional and national competitions.

Students opened the competition with written tests. Winning teams moved onto a championship round. Quiz master for the round was Bill Bosher, executive director of the Commonwealth Educational Policy Institute, and judges were economics professors from VCU and the University of Richmond, and a senior economist from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

Founded in 1969 at the VCU School of Business, the Virginia Council on Economic Education promotes the economic and financial literacy of Virginia’s K-12 students by training teachers, providing curriculum materials and actively advocating economic and financial literacy education in the state. The council offers year-round professional development workshops to more than 4,000 K-12 teachers.
