RICHMOND, Va. — High on just about everyone’s list of desired qualities in a physician are both medical ability and a bedside manner that bring comfort and confidence to a patient. The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey recently recognized two Virginia Commonwealth University physicians for their consistent demonstrations of these qualities.

Thomas Smith, M.D., chairman of hematology and oncology at VCU’s Massey Cancer Center and a physician for more than 21 years, and Munish Goyal, M.D., who recently received his medical degree from VCU, are the recipients of the Humanism in Medicine Award. The award honors health-care providers who are exemplary in their empathy and sensitivity toward patients and families.

"These are two extraordinary people who have tremendous medical ability but also are extremely adept at dealing with people," said Hugo Seibel, Ph.D., professor of anatomy and associate dean of student activities and electives in VCU’s School of Medicine.

In its third year, the award is given to one faculty member and one graduating medical student at each of the 85 medical centers the foundation supports. The recipients are selected from nominations from their institution. In turn, each institution receives a $4,000 grant that is divided between the two honorees.
