VCU prepares for upcoming UCI Road World Cycling Championships

The countdown to the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, Sept. 19-27, is well underway, and planning for Virginia Commonwealth University and the VCU Health System continues to take shape as information becomes available from the city of Richmond and the event’s planners.

A committee of representatives from across the units at VCU and the VCU Health System has been meeting regularly to determine the best ways to ensure continued access to and from campuses as well as opportunities for everyone to get involved and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Richmond region.

Thus far, the university has announced the following details related to its academic schedule and operations:

1.    Classes will not be held on the Monroe Park Campus from Sept. 21 through Sept. 25. Students in the Health Sciences schools (Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Allied Health Professions) will need to check with their academic program contact as each schedule will be managed separately. Please be assured that academic integrity will not be compromised as adjustments to the calendar have been made to ensure sufficient teaching hours are maintained.

2.    All residence halls will remain open during this period so that students will have the option to stay on campus and participate in work or meaningful community service, education or event-related activities.

3.   There also will be an impact on employees as the university and the health system work to ensure continuity of operations. VCU will recognize liberal telecommuting for its employees during this time, while the VCU Health System will continue normal operations. VCU employees may use up to 16 work hours to volunteer. These hours will be treated the same as regular work time and not as leave. Those employees with dual reporting roles will be encouraged to consult their managers to determine which operations protocol to follow.

Websites for the university and the VCU Medical Center are currently under construction, with planned launch dates in April. In the meantime, the university is collecting questions via a new app on the VCU Facebook page.
