Richmond City Council this week presented Virginia Commonwealth University President Dr. Eugene P. Trani with a certificate of recognition for distinguished service in the economic development and revitalization efforts in the City of Richmond.
The certificate recognizes Dr. Trani as "a leader of vision" who initiated a transformation of VCU at the start of his tenure in 1990, and in the ensuing 13 years, established the School of Engineering, the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, VCU Life Sciences, and a visionary master site plan leading to the redevelopment of Broad Street.
"Under Dr. Trani's leadership, VCU has expanded to become one of the most prominent and well respected organizations in this country," the citation reads. It highlights the establishment of the VCU Health System as a hallmark of his administration.
The certificate also recognizes Dr. Trani for his service on numerous corporate and civic boards in the Richmond area, and scholarly positions he has held in the United States and abroad. The certificate notes his academic and community leadership, which has been recognized by several major organizations including the Central Richmond Association, the National Association of Community Leadership, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Greater Richmond Technology Council, and Governor Gilmore's Commission on Information Technology.
Signed by Richmond Mayor Rudolph McCollum, Jr. and City Council 3rd District Representative W. Randolph Johnson, Jr., the certificate is given "in grateful appreciation for continuing efforts to enhance private-public partnerships and supporting the city's master plan, contributing to making Richmond one of the most progressive cities in this country."
