In observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Radiation Sciences team participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk in Richmond for the third year in a row.

Led by radiation therapy program Director Melanie Dempsey, the Radiation Sciences team, made up of more than 55 students, faculty and friends, was again the largest VCU team at the October event. The team raised more than $3,200 to support breast cancer research, surpassing its goal.

“It is inspiring to see such a dedicated group of health care professionals committed to raising funds and awareness for such an important cause,” said Jeffrey Legg, Ph.D., chair of Radiation Sciences.

The Department of Radiation Sciences offers a bachelor of science degree in clinical radiation sciences in nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy and radiography. It is Virginia’s only bachelor’s program with content specific to radiography and radiation therapy and the only nuclear medicine program in central Virginia.
