An independent ranking of universities across the world lists Virginia Commonwealth University in the top 200 world universities and the top 100 North & Latin American Universities.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities 2004, compiled by the Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, ranks the top 500 universities in the world based on academic or research performance. The latest world rankings place VCU in the 153 – 201 range, along with universities such as Virginia Tech, University of Notre Dame and the University of Turin, Italy. VCU places in the top 77-101 range among universities in North and Latin America.
The SJTU Institute of Higher Education uses several indicators of academic or research performance that are based on internationally comparable data to rank the universities. These include alumni and staff who have won Nobel Prizes and Field Medals for mathematics, highly cited researchers, articles published in Nature and Science, articles in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index, and academic performance with respect to the size of the institution.
SJTU issued the first world rankings in 2003 as a way to determine the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities. The rankings now are compiled as a resource to compare and identify universities worldwide by their academic or research performance.
Shangahi Jiao Tong University is considered to be one of China’s major universities, making significant contributions to science and technology over its nearly 110-year history. SJTU comprises 21 academic schools and enrolls 24,000 full-time students.
