The Virginia Commonwealth University Staff Senate will sponsor the 5th annual Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship Walk-A-Thon on April 9.

The event, from noon until 2:30 p.m., benefits the Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship, which has assisted 35 students in the past four years. Scholarship recipients are rising juniors or seniors with a GPA of at least 2.7, have demonstrated a need for financial aid, have past or current community service and work a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Last year’s event was the largest to date, raising more than $14,000. Marquita Aguilar, activities and events chair for the VCU Staff Senate, says she is optimistic this year’s walk proceeds will exceed last year’s numbers.

“The people at VCU really care,” said Aguilar. “We see the students, get to know them, and watch them grow from freshman to seniors. We want to help.”

Participants range from faculty and staff to students, alumni and VCU community members. This year, a group of prospective students from various Chesterfield high schools also are expected to participate.

The event begins in the University Student Commons Commonwealth Ballroom, with addresses by VCU President Eugene P. Trani and Provost Stephen Gottfredson. A group warm up takes place before participants head to Monroe Park.

Participants walk at their own pace for as long as they wish. Following the walk, a light lunch is served at the Commons. Vendors and sponsors are present, and door prizes are given away.
