The Virginia Commonwealth University staff senate has presented scholarships to seven undergraduate students.

The Virginia's Caring University Scholarships, which ranged in value from $400 to $1,000, were presented at a reception at the VCU Student Commons on Sept. 13. Finalists were selected from students who applied for the awards last semester.

The staff senate established the scholarships and sponsored a walk-a-thon fitness event last April, which raised $4,000. University juniors and seniors with a grade point average of 2.7 or better who could demonstrate need and past or current community service were encouraged to apply for the awards.

“We were looking for students who care for the community and the university and were committed to their studies,” said Marquita Aguilar, administrative assistant in the office of the Dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences and chair of the staff senate volunteer committee. “We wanted to do something to make their vision of graduating from VCU a reality.”

Receiving scholarships were Frederick Boateng, Sumona Kabir, Asia Powell, Monique Ribbon, Jaime Rodriguez, Amber Smith and Latoria Wilson.
