Virginia Commonwealth University will celebrate the conclusion of the largest capital campaign in its history that will fund goals including fighting the war on cancer, relieving the national nursing shortage and turning out the best and brightest engineers and business executives.

The celebration will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27 at the StuartC.SiegelCenter, 1200 W. Broad St.

About 450 people are expected to attend the event to learn the results of the eight-year Campaign for VCU. The original goal of the campaign was $330.5 million and is intended to fund eight major initiatives based on relating the university's needs to those of the community:

·        Fight the war on cancer;

·        Relieve the national nursing shortage;

·        Provide business with well-trained and motivated engineers and business executives who have exceptional technical and business skills;

·        Grant greater access to the fulfillment of the American dream through scholarships;

·        Improve patient care;

·        Establish Central Virginia as a national leader in the life sciences;

·        Attract bright and ambitious students and faculty to our community;

·        Enhance the region's cultural and artistic atmosphere.

The campaign was co-chaired by James and Charlotte Roberts for the MCV Campus, and Thomas and Vickie Snead for the Monroe Park Campus. Honorary chair of the campaign was Richard T. Robertson, VCU Board of Visitors member and senior adviser to the Warner Bros. Television Group. Robertson chaired VCU's last campaign that ended in 1998 and raised more than $167 million.
